AGRICULTURE & FOOD AUTHORITY (AFA)- KENYA IMPOSES BAN ON OVACADO IMPORTS BY SEA

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has not imposed a blanket ban on avocado imports by sea. Instead, it closed the harvesting season for avocado sea exports effective October 30, 2026, affecting the Hass, Fuerte, Pinkerton, and Jumbo varieties after a nationwide survey showed production volumes were too low to sustain sea shipments. Air exports remain permitted provided consignments undergo inspection and meet traceability requirements. The directive also suspends the harvesting of avocados for oil processing and bans the importation of avocado fruit for oil processing, a measure aimed at preventing traders from passing off immature local avocados as imported produce. The AFA further warned mango exporters against mixing avocados into sea-bound mango consignments to circumvent the restrictions, with violations risking revocation of export licenses. (ICE NAIROBI)
