INDONESIA DEVELOPS PRODUCER-FUNDED WASTE MANAGEMENT MECHANISM
Indonesia is developing a new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) mechanism that will require businesses to take greater responsibility for the waste generated by their products, packaging, and containers. Under a draft regulation being prepared by the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Control Agency, producers will be accountable for waste management throughout the entire product lifecycle, from design and production to post-consumer disposal. The policy is intended to support Indonesia’s transition to a circular economy while reducing pressure on the country’s waste management system. Diaz Hendropriyono, Deputy Minister of Environment and Deputy Head of the Environmental Control Agency, said the obligations would apply equally to all businesses, with the regulation expected to be finalized in November. The initiative comes as Indonesia faces significant waste-management challenges. The country generates around 144,500 tonnes of waste per day, yet only about 25% is properly managed, while nearly 70% of its 522 landfill sites still rely on open dumping methods. Indonesia also produces approximately 10.83 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, much of which remains inadequately handled despite existing recycling capacity. Through the EPR framework, the government aims to improve waste collection and recycling rates, reduce environmental impacts, and help achieve its target of managing all nationally generated waste by 2029.Source: https://en.vietnamplus.vn/indonesia-develops-producer-funded-waste-management-mechanism-post354406.vnp (ICE GIACARTA)
