INDONESIA EYES HIGHER REVENUE THROUGH BAUXITE DOWNSTREAMING

Indonesia is seeking to boost state revenue and create jobs by accelerating the downstream processing of bauxite into alumina, aluminum, and higher-value manufactured products. According to Arif Haendra, Director of Corporate Strategy, Business Development, and Commercial Affairs at PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum), bauxite worth around US$40 can increase in value to approximately US$400 when processed into alumina, with further gains achieved through aluminum production and downstream manufacturing. This value-added strategy is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s domestic aluminum supply chain and reduce reliance on raw commodity exports. Beyond increasing export value, bauxite downstreaming is projected to deliver broader economic benefits through higher tax revenues, expanded transportation and supporting industries, and significant job creation. Inalum estimates that the development of the alumina processing industry could generate around 130,000 jobs in Mempawah, West Kalimantan. The company is also promoting further downstream applications, including construction materials, electrical cables, automotive components, and electric vehicle battery materials, to maximize the value of Indonesia’s abundant bauxite resources and strengthen the national manufacturing sector.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2846360/indonesia-eyes-higher-revenue-through-bauxite-downstreaming (ICE GIACARTA)
