INDONESIA CONSIDERS ALLOWING NATURAL GAS EXPORT CONTRACTS TO EXPIRE TO MEET Domestic Demand
Indonesia is weighing the option of not renewing natural gas export contracts with neighboring countries in order to prioritize domestic energy needs amid rising global uncertainty. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that this policy shift aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to take a survival-oriented stance in response to heightened geopolitical tensions and international energy challenges. Bahlil emphasized that government officials are translating the president's mandate into concrete measures aimed at safeguarding the country's economic and strategic resilience. Under the proposed strategy, the government intends to reassess existing energy exports, ensuring that natural gas is allocated to satisfy local demand before any supplies are committed abroad. Bahlil cautioned neighboring trade partners that Indonesia will prioritize meeting the requirements of national industries and households first. This potential adjustment underscores a broader policy transition toward national energy security, shielding domestic consumers from external supply shocks and unpredictable global market conditions.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/bahlil-weighs-ending-gas-export-contracts-to-prioritize-domestic-supply (ICE GIACARTA)
