INDONESIA PREPARES RESPONSE TO EU AND UK STEEL TRADE MEASURES

Indonesia’s Trade Ministry is formulating contingency measures to counter the impact of 50 percent steel tariffs imposed by the European Union and the United Kingdom on Indonesian steel exports. Dina Kurniasari, Director of WTO Negotiations at the Ministry, highlighted that shifting international trade policies, such as tariff adjustments, strict quota systems, and decarbonization mandates like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM),pose direct threats to market access and export performance. While the government is pursuing diplomatic channels to advocate for non-discriminatory rules consistent with multilateral WTO standards, it is also preparing worst-case scenarios to mitigate rising trade uncertainty and maintain the price competitiveness of national steel products. These external trade restrictions come at a time when Indonesia's domestic steel industry is actively scaling up its production capacity. According to the Indonesian Iron and Steel Industry Association (IISIA), its 189 member companies currently possess a combined annual production capacity of 18 million tons. In contrast, national steel imports for 2024–2025 are projected at around 8 million tons annually, with shipments having already reached 7 million tons through August. This growing domestic capability underscores the urgent need for robust risk-mitigation strategies to safeguard local producers from global trade remedies and overcapacity pressures.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/436029/indonesia-readies-contingency-measures-against-eu-and-uk-steel-tariffs?utm_source=chatgpt.com (ICE GIACARTA)
