BANK INDONESIA HOLDS BENCHMARK RATE AT 5.75% AND UNVEILS POLICY MIX TO BALANCE Stability and Growth

Bank Indonesia (BI) kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 5.75% on October 21, aligning with forecasts from half of the 38 economists surveyed by Bloomberg while the other half anticipated an increase. Governor Destry Damayanti described the decision as part of a calibrated policy mix designed to support economic growth, safeguard the 1.5%–3.5% inflation target, and stabilize the rupiah. To balance domestic credit expansion with external stability, the central bank announced a two-percentage-point cut in banks' reserve requirement ratios by December, freeing over USD 10 billion for lending, alongside an increase in the deposit facility rate to 5% to bolster returns on rupiah assets and encourage capital inflows. The decision reflects the challenging environment facing Indonesian policymakers under President Prabowo Subianto, exacerbated by MSCI Inc.'s warning of a potential downgrade from emerging-market to standalone status, which triggered significant market volatility across domestic equities, bonds, and the currency. With the rupiah weakening past 18,000 per dollar amid elevated oil prices, regional geopolitical tensions, and anticipated US monetary tightening, BI prioritized liquidity management and targeted foreign-exchange measures over broad rate increases. While analysts noted that pursuing dual goals of currency defense and economic stimulus presents a delicate balancing act, the central bank reiterated its commitment to monitoring capital outflows and maintaining macroeconomic stability.Source: https://theedgemalaysia.com/node/822674?utm_source=chatgpt.com (ICE GIACARTA)
