INDONESIA ADVANCES BLUE CARBON PROJECTS TOWARD 2045 CONSERVATION GOAL
Indonesia is exploring blue carbon financing as a key instrument to support the development of a low-emission blue economy and strengthen the protection of coastal ecosystems. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has partnered with the Indonesian Zero Emissions Association (AZEI) to advance projects that combine environmental conservation with economic benefits for local communities. According to Director General of Marine Management Koswara, cross-sector collaboration is essential to transform the concept of a low-emission maritime sector into practical programs that deliver measurable impacts. The partnership, formalized through an agreement signed on October 5, includes the development of innovative financing mechanisms for blue carbon initiatives. Beyond blue carbon financing, the cooperation covers low-emission mobility and infrastructure, enhanced blue carbon management systems, waste management, sustainable salt-production ecosystems, and information dissemination in coastal and small-island areas. The initiative is also intended to support Indonesia’s goal of expanding marine conservation areas to 30 percent of its marine territory, equivalent to approximately 97.5 million hectares, by 2045. The government views blue carbon development as an important strategy for protecting carbon-rich coastal ecosystems while improving marine environmental quality and boosting the welfare of coastal communities through sustainable economic opportunities.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2809091/indonesia-advances-blue-carbon-projects-toward-2045-conservation-goal (ICE GIACARTA)
