INDONESIA TARGETS EIGHT PERCENT GROWTH TO CAPTURE DEMOGRAPHIC BONUS
Indonesia must achieve annual economic growth of 8 percent to fully benefit from its demographic bonus before the country transitions into an aging society, according to Deputy Finance Minister Juda Agung. Speaking at the Prasasti Indonesia Policy Forum 2026, he emphasized that Indonesia has only a 10–15 year window to capitalize on its large working-age population, digitally connected youth, and vast domestic market. Agung stressed that demographic advantages alone will not drive prosperity unless they are supported by higher labor productivity, stronger human capital, and sufficient job creation aligned with market needs. Agung warned that Indonesia risks “growing old before becoming wealthy” if it fails to act with urgency. Demographic projections show the country’s dependency ratio is expected to rise significantly by 2045, increasing pressure on economic growth. To achieve the 8 percent target, he called for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors, as well as structural reforms to move the economy beyond raw commodity exports. Key priorities include developing higher value-added industries, fostering innovation, and strengthening links between education, research, technology, and manufacturing so that Indonesia can play a larger role in global value chains.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/435246/indonesia-targets-eight-percent-growth-to-capture-demographic-bonus (ICE GIACARTA)
