INDONESIA TARGETS GLOBAL MINERAL PRICING POWER WITH NEW EXCHANGE IN 2027

Indonesia aims to strengthen its influence in global mineral markets through the launch of the Mineral and Strategic Commodities Exchange (BMKS), which is scheduled to begin operations in January 2027. The initiative is intended to help the country move from being a “price taker” to eventually becoming a “price maker” in mineral commodity pricing. According to Sarjito, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) executive overseeing BMKS, Indonesia will first focus on building market liquidity, credibility, and domestic reference prices before seeking a larger role in setting global mineral prices. To support the new exchange, OJK has issued two regulations establishing its operational and supervisory framework. In its initial phase, BMKS will focus on selected commodities, particularly tin and ferronickel, with expansion planned gradually as market conditions develop. The government expects the exchange to improve price formation, enhance transparency, strengthen risk management, and provide greater certainty in transaction clearing and settlement. Officials emphasized that legal certainty, reliable trading mechanisms, and international market participation will be essential for BMKS to gain global recognition and influence.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/7549/energy-and-resources/indonesia-targets-global-mineral-pricing-power-with-new-exchange-in-2027 (ICE GIACARTA)
