INDONESIA TARGETS AI AND DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE TO DRIVE NEXT GENERATION Downstreaming Strategy
Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto announced a strategic shift in the nation's downstreaming agenda, integrating artificial intelligence, automation, and digital infrastructure to boost industrial efficiency and economic growth. Moving beyond basic mineral extraction, the government is targeting 3,839 trillion rupiah in total downstream investments through 2029 to raise national growth toward an ambitious 8 percent. Minister Airlangga pointed to real-world applications, such as PT Vale Indonesia leveraging AI to improve operational protocol compliance from 89 to 95 percent and boost annual nickel yields, alongside smart factories utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to maintain continuous production. Beyond heavy industry, Indonesia is positioning its abundant land, water, and energy resources to become a primary hub for AI data centers and digital infrastructure, aiming to drive the ASEAN digital economy toward 2 trillion USD through the Digital Economic Framework Agreement (DEFA). However, expanding high-tech manufacturing and computational data hubs requires overcoming grid infrastructure constraints, securing green energy, and expanding domestic AI and semiconductor vocational training. Downstreaming and digital infrastructure projects also support regional economic equity, with over 75 percent of recent downstream investments deployed outside Java to establish new industrial growth hubs across Sulawesi, Sumatra, and Kalimantan.
