KAZAKHSTAN-PAYMENT-BALANCE-SURPLUS

Kazakhstan's current account swings to $2.4 bln surplus, first in three yearsKazakhstan's current account recorded a surplus of $2.4 billion, or 1.6% of GDP, in the first half of 2026, the Ministry of National Economy said, citing National Bank data. This marks the first surplus in three years.A year earlier, the current account showed a deficit of $3.6 billion for the same period. The balance thus improved by $6 billion. The improvement was driven primarily by export growth outpacing imports. The second quarter contributed the most, with a current account surplus of $3.2 billion.Between 2016 and 2025, Kazakhstan's current account was in deficit in nine out of ten years, with an average shortfall of about 2.7% of GDP. "Goods trade consistently ran a surplus, but a significant portion was offset by income payments to foreign investors," the ministry said. After a $6.4 billion surplus in 2022, the current account returned to deficit. The 2025 result was affected by lower oil prices and high import volumes, the ministry said. (ICE ALMATY)
