INDONESIA TARGETS 14,000 KM RAIL EXPANSION BY 2045
Indonesia plans to invest IDR1,100–1,200 trillion (US$61–67 billion) to develop and reactivate approximately 14,000 kilometers of railway tracks by 2045, aiming to improve connectivity, logistics, and sustainable transportation across the country. According to Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, the expansion of railway infrastructure outside Java is a key priority under President Prabowo Subianto's national development agenda. The project will focus on strengthening commodity and passenger transport networks in Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Beyond rail-track construction, the government also plans to expand passenger train fleets and strengthen the domestic railway industry through international collaboration and technology transfer. The Minister emphasized that partnerships with countries such as Japan should help develop local technological capabilities and industry competitiveness. He also highlighted rail transport's environmental benefits, noting its efficiency and contribution of less than 1% of greenhouse gas emissions, while stressing the need for strong coordination between central and regional governments to ensure railway development supports broader economic growth.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/7537/business-and-investment/infrastructure-and-development-ministry-targets-14-000-km-of-new-reactivated-railway-tracks-by-2045 (ICE GIACARTA)
