INDONESIA: BATTERY, SOLAR MANUFACTURING KEY TO NEXT-STAGE DOWNSTREAMING
The Center of Economic and Law Studies (Celios) has urged Indonesia to move its downstreaming strategy beyond basic mineral processing and focus on higher-value industries, particularly in critical minerals and renewable energy. According to Bhima Yudhistira, Executive Director of Celios, investments in the nickel sector should not stop at ferronickel or nickel pig iron production but should advance further along the supply chain into products such as battery precursors. He emphasized that deeper downstreaming, supported by stronger environmental governance, would create greater added value and strengthen Indonesia’s industrial ecosystem. Celios also highlighted opportunities linked to Indonesia’s planned 100-GW solar power program, suggesting that the government attract investment and joint ventures in solar modules, solar cells, polymers, and other related manufacturing industries. The organization views downstreaming and the energy transition as interconnected processes that can develop domestic supply chains and enhance industrial competitiveness. In the first half of 2026, downstreaming investment reached Rp300.1 trillion (US$16.9 billion), accounting for nearly 30% of total investment realization, while the government is also advancing major downstreaming projects in minerals, energy, agriculture, and fisheries through the Downstreaming Task Force and Danantara.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/7515/energy-and-resources/indonesia-urged-to-take-downstreaming-to-next-level-with-battery-solar-manufacturing (ICE GIACARTA)
