PT PAL Indonesia (the largest state-owned shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing company in Indonesia) and Italy’s Fincantieri have signed an agreement to modernize KRI Sriwijaya, formerly the Italian Navy’s aircraft-carrying cruiser ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi. Under the partnership, Fincantieri will contribute its expertise as the vessel’s original designer and builder, while PT PAL will provide its capabilities in shipbuilding, systems integration, maintenance, and support services. The upgrade aims to enhance the ship’s operational effectiveness across defense, maritime security, humanitarian, and emergency response missions. The modernization project is expected to deepen defense and industrial cooperation between Indonesia and Italy by involving technology partners and industrial companies from both countries. According to Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero, the collaboration reflects the growing strategic relationship between the two nations and marks a shift from naval platform deliveries toward broader industrial partnerships focused on technology transfer, local capability development, and shared expertise.
