INDONESIAN GOVT ALLOCATES 5.67 MILLION HECTARES FOREST FOR FOOD, ENERGY,SERVICES
Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry has designated 5.67 million hectares of forest land for business permits supporting food security, energy, non-timber forest products, and environmental services under the 2026 Forest Utilization Guidelines Map (PAPH). The allocation includes 387,641 hectares for sugar palm cultivation as a bioenergy source and 68,454 hectares for agroforestry crops such as rice, corn, soybeans, coffee, and cocoa. Officials said the initiative aims to show that preserving forests can generate greater economic value than converting them for other uses. The plan also supports forest restoration, with 902,298 hectares earmarked for rehabilitation of degraded forest areas. Permit holders will be allowed to develop environmental services, non-timber forest products, and carbon-based projects while restoring forest ecosystems. Meanwhile, around 2.7 million hectares of protected and production forests within the moratorium area can only be utilized without altering the landscape, and the government has tightened permit requirements by mandating governors’ recommendations for all forest utilization business licenses.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/433312/govt-allocates-567-million-hectares-forest-for-food-energy-services?utm_source=antaranews&utm_medium=mobile&utm_campaign=latest_category (ICE GIACARTA)
