INDONESIA OVERTAKES CHINA TO BECOME THE WORLD’S LEADING REFINED NICKEL PRODUCER
Indonesia has become the world’s largest producer of refined nickel, overtaking China after a decade of rapid growth fueled by its downstream processing policy. According to data cited by Our World in Data, Indonesia’s refined nickel output surged from around 22,000 tonnes in 2014 to more than 1.4 million tonnes in 2023, increasing its share of global production from 1% to 41%. The growth was driven by government restrictions on raw nickel ore exports, which encouraged domestic refining and processing industries. Indonesia surpassed China in refined nickel production in 2021 and has since expanded its lead, although much of the sector’s growth has been supported by Chinese investment. The government is now seeking greater influence over global nickel prices by controlling production volumes through the RKAB mechanism. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said these measures have helped stabilize nickel prices and strengthen Indonesia’s bargaining position in the global market.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/7444/energy-and-resources/indonesia-overtakes-china-to-become-the-world-s-leading-refined-nickel-producer (ICE GIACARTA)
