INDONESIA PARTNERS WITH CHINA IN ARAFURA FISHERY, TARGETS US$4M REVENUE

Indonesia has launched a fisheries cooperation program with China by deploying 33 Indonesian-flagged fishing vessels in Fisheries Management Area 718 in the Arafura Sea. The initiative, carried out under the Indonesia-China Technical Cooperation Guidelines (TCG), is expected to produce about 9,500 tonnes of fish annually, generate IDR65 billion (US$3.67 million) in non-tax state revenue, and create employment for 669 workers. According to Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, the partnership aims not only to boost fish production but also to modernize the fishing fleet, strengthen the fisheries industry, create jobs, and enhance technology transfer and supply chain development. The cooperation supports Indonesia’s measured fishing policy, which seeks to prevent illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing while improving food security, state revenue, and community welfare. KKP officials stated that the vessels will operate under strict fishing quotas and regulatory oversight, including licensing, catch monitoring, and traceability requirements. The TCG builds on previous Indonesia-China maritime and fisheries agreements and covers a broader range of activities, including fish processing, port and fisheries infrastructure development, skills training, data exchange, and protection of fisheries workers' welfare.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/7443/national-resilience/indonesia-partners-with-china-in-arafura-fishery-deploys-33-vessels-targets-us-4m-revenue (ICE GIACARTA)
