UKRAINE’S AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS IMPROVE IN SEPTEMBER

Ukrainian agricultural exporters increased shipment volumes in September compared with August, though limited seaport capacity remains a key economic risk, Agrarian Policy Minister Taras Vysotskyi said. Alternative routes currently cover about 44% of the export volume Ukraine’s current production could support, up from roughly 30% in August. “The situation in September is better than in August, yet it remains challenging. Businesses, working with the state, are expanding alternative logistics capabilities, and these measures are already yielding results,” Vysotskyi said, speaking after a meeting with Estonia’s Minister of Regional Affairs and Agriculture, Hendrik Johannes Terras.More than 90% of Ukraine’s agricultural exports used to move through Black Sea ports before Russian strikes on port infrastructure and civilian vessels disrupted shipping. Alternative routes could lift export coverage to about 50%, Vysotskyi said, but expanding further without restoring full seaport operations would be extremely difficult.Up to 20 million tonnes of Ukrainian grain could potentially move through the Baltic ports of Gdansk, Klaipeda, Liepaja and Hamburg, but the route adds roughly $100 per tonne in transport costs, an expense producers cannot absorb on their own. Covering the gap would require $1.5B to $2B, and Ukraine has asked the EU and other international partners to help finance it to secure the minimum necessary export volumes. The two ministries also discussed preventing Russian-origin or occupied-territory grain from being laundered through European logistics infrastructure, with Ukraine offering to share a verification methodology developed with the UK.https://ubn.news/ukraines-agricultural-exports-improve-in-september-as-kyiv-seeks-baltic-route-funding/ (ICE KIEV)
