India’s semiconductor market is projected to grow more than threefold from nearly Rs. 5.94 lakh crore (US$ 64 billion) in 2026 to Rs. 18.57 lakh crore (US$ 200 billion) by 2035, according to an EY-IESA report titled Semicon India 2.0: From Capacity Creation to Ecosystem Leadership. The report highlighted the opportunity to convert rising domestic semiconductor demand into greater manufacturing, innovation and supply chain resilience. Consumer electronics currently accounts for around 30% of India’s semiconductor market, followed by the automotive sector at 16% and industrial applications at 15%. Emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, data centres, telecommunications, electric mobility and advanced manufacturing are expected to generate additional demand for semiconductor products.India’s semiconductor imports increased more than fivefold from Rs. 0.38 lakh crore (US$ 5.70 billion) in FY17 to Rs. 2.62 lakh crore (US$ 30.30 billion) in FY25, registering a compound annual growth rate of 23%. The report noted that the increase underscores the need to translate domestic demand into local fabrication and manufacturing capabilities. India also accounts for nearly 20% of the world’s chip design engineers, providing a significant talent base for semiconductor design, manufacturing and commercialisation. Total electronics production increased nearly sixfold from Rs. 1.90 lakh crore (US$ 31.07 billion) in FY15 to Rs. 11.30 lakh crore (US$ 130.68 billion) in FY25, while electronics exports increased elevenfold during the decade.
