Kazakhstan to allow crypto miners to install autonomous power plants at oil and gas fieldsKazakhstan has introduced a mechanism allowing crypto miners to generate power from associated petroleum gas directly at oil fields, Deputy Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Gizzat Baitursynov said."The idea is to put unused resources to work for digital mining by generating electricity from associated petroleum gas right at the oil fields. Today, many fields don't use all of their associated gas — some of it is flared, some is reinjected. Instead, we can generate power on site and use it for digital mining," Baitursynov told a government meeting in Astana on Tuesday. The Energy Ministry has helped develop a mechanism to carry out the plan, he said."A miner will be able to reach an agreement with the subsoil user and install an autonomous power plant directly at the field. The project doesn’t add load to the country’s power grid – it turns an unused resource into economic value," the deputy minister said. The approach could also be applied to coal mine methane, he said.
