PT Pertamina (Persero) and PT Industri Baterai Indonesia (IBC) have signed an MoU to strengthen Indonesia’s electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem. The partnership covers battery recycling and recovery of critical materials from used batteries, development of battery recycling and reuse facilities, and joint research on next-generation battery technologies, including sodium-ion batteries (SIB) and solid-state batteries (SSB). The two companies will also explore the use of materials from Pertamina’s oil and gas operations within IBC’s battery supply chain and collaborate on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a minimum capacity of 20 kWh for Pertamina’s operational sites. The collaboration comes as IBC advances its battery manufacturing ambitions through PT Contemporary Amperex Technology Indonesia Battery (CATIB), a joint venture with China’s CATL-led consortium. IBC has confirmed the existence of a standby buyer for CATIB-produced batteries, while the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources stated that CATIB’s battery cell plant in Karawang has entered the commissioning phase and begun gradual operations. The facility will initially produce 6.9 GWh of battery cells, modules, and packs, with expansion plans to reach 15 GWh.
