Indonesia has officially begun construction of a IDR 3 trillion (US$169.4 million) waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in Bantar Gebang, Bekasi, with operations targeted to start by mid-2028. The facility will process up to 1,500 tons of waste per day and convert it into electricity, while state-owned utility PLN has agreed to purchase the generated power at US$0.20 per kWh. The project is being developed by Daya Energi Bersih Nusantara (Denera), a subsidiary of Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund Danantara, using low-emission incineration technology designed for Indonesian waste characteristics and aligned with EU environmental standards. Bekasi was selected because its landfill capacity has been exceeded, creating health and safety concerns.
