Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has launched an ambitious national solar initiative, breaking ground on three solar projects (396.4 MWp) and opening tender-ready projects to reach a target of 100 gigawatt-peak (GWp) of solar capacity within three years. Estimated at $71.3 billion, the plan aims to replace fuel-based generation, save up to Rp 73.9 trillion ($4.14 billion) annually in electricity costs, and involve private Independent Power Producers (IPPs) alongside potential state asset fund (Danantara) financing. However, achieving this goal poses a steep uphill battle: current installed capacity sits at just around 1.6 GW, and the ministry faces significant logistical and environmental challenges across project sites.
