Indonesia is moving forward with plans for its first nuclear power plant as part of efforts to reduce reliance on coal and meet decarbonization goals. The government has resumed discussions after decades of delays, with Pulau Semesak in West Kalimantan emerging as a leading candidate site because it is uninhabited and strategically located. Officials aim to have the plant operational by 2032 and target nuclear energy to contribute up to 12.1% of Indonesia’s primary energy mix by 2060. Local leaders support the project, viewing it as an opportunity to attract investment, stimulate industrial growth, and showcase technological advancement. Despite government backing, the proposal has sparked concerns about safety and economic feasibility.
