Indonesia and the European Union are preparing to implement the IEU-CEPA trade agreement, which Trade Minister Budi Santoso described as Indonesia’s most ambitious tariff commitment in any trade deal. The agreement will liberalize around 98% of tariff lines, covering 99.5% of total import value between the two economies. This is expected to significantly improve Indonesian exporters’ access to the EU market of 450 million consumers, with important exports such as palm oil products, textiles, footwear, and rubber goods receiving zero-tariff treatment. In return, Indonesia will remove tariffs on several major EU products, including wood pulp, aircraft components, railway equipment, and fertilizers. Beyond tariff reductions, the agreement aims to streamline trade procedures through digitalization, faster customs processes, standards cooperation, and sustainability measures. The pact is also intended to attract investment, strengthen Indonesia’s role in global supply chains, and deepen economic cooperation with Europe.
