Indonesia is considering incentives for nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption while supporting the development of a domestic EV supply chain based on the country's abundant nickel resources. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the policy reflects Indonesia’s focus on nickel-based battery technology, which aligns with the nation’s strategy to build an integrated EV battery ecosystem. In contrast, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are not a priority because Indonesia lacks the raw materials needed for their production. The proposed incentive program, currently under government review, would target 100,000 electric cars and 100,000 electric motorcycles this year. Buyers of electric motorcycles could receive subsidies of IDR 5 million (US$280) per unit, while electric car purchasers may benefit from government-covered value-added tax (VAT) of between 40% and 100%. Incentives for electric cars would vary depending on battery technology, with separate treatment for nickel-based and non-nickel batteries.
