At the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026, Indonesia's Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita emphasized the country’s transformation from being merely an automotive market into a production base. He highlighted the strategic role of the automotive industry in strengthening economic resilience, noting that manufacturing contributes 19.07 percent to GDP and over 82 percent of national exports. In the first half of 2026, motor vehicle production rose 11.3 percent to 615,000 units, while wholesale sales increased 15.9 percent to 436,000 units. Kartasasmita expressed confidence that domestic sales would reach the 2026 target of 850,000 units, stressing that Indonesia must capitalize on market growth with locally produced vehicles rather than imports. He also pointed to strong export performance, with completely built-up (CBU) vehicle exports up 7.7 percent, completely knocked down (CKD) exports up 38 percent, and component exports up 46 percent, while imports of complete vehicles fell by 49 percent. Kartasasmita underscored that deeper integration into the value chain accelerates growth, positioning Indonesia as a capable manufacturer rather than just an exporter.
