Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry announced that 93 hydrogen ecosystem projects worth Rp32 trillion (around US$2.05 billion) are currently being developed across the country. The government is closely monitoring these initiatives to accelerate implementation and support its dedieselization strategy, which aims to replace diesel-based power generation with cleaner energy sources. Key projects include a renewable energy development in Sumba targeted for operation by 2028, a solar-powered hydrogen storage project on Rengit Island with PT PLN (Indonesia's state-owned electric utility company) for remote communities, and PT Pertamina’s green hydrogen production facility powered by geothermal energy at the Ulubelu field in Lampung. The ministry believes that expanding Indonesia’s hydrogen ecosystem will strengthen national energy security and reduce dependence on imported fuels. To support this goal, the government launched the Hydrogen Diesel Dual Fuel (H2 DDF) Bus Pilot program with Perum DAMRI, enabling buses to operate on a diesel-hydrogen fuel blend. The initiative is expected to lower diesel imports and emissions while fostering a low-carbon transportation ecosystem.
