INDONESIA OPENS BIOETHANOL INVESTMENT AS IT TARGETS E20 FUEL BY 2028

Indonesia is opening bioethanol production to private companies as part of its plan to introduce E20 gasoline (20% ethanol blend) by 2028. The government is revising Presidential Regulation No. 40/2023 to provide a stronger legal framework for bioethanol development, attract investment, and expand domestic production capacity. According to Energy Ministry official Eniya Listiani Dewi, private sector participation is crucial because Indonesia currently has only one operational bioethanol plant, despite having the technical capability to implement E20 nationwide. The government, under President Prabowo Subianto’s direction, aims to build 30–50 bioethanol plants to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthen energy security, and grow the renewable fuel industry. While a bioethanol plant can be completed in about 1.5 years, successful implementation will depend on the availability of domestic feedstock. Inspired by countries such as India, which has adopted E20, and Brazil, where ethanol fuel is widely used, Indonesia hopes regulatory reforms and private investment will help achieve its E20 target within the next few years.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/6958/national-resilience/indonesia-opens-bioethanol-investment-as-it-targets-e20-fuel-by-2028 (ICE GIACARTA)
