Indonesia's state-owned energy giant, PT Pertamina, is developing a 30 MW waste-to-energy (PSEL) plant in Yogyakarta to process more than 1,000 tons of daily waste generated in Yogyakarta, Sleman, and Bantul. The project will use advanced incinerator technology to convert waste into electricity that will be supplied to PLN’s regional grid. Pertamina chose this technology for its ability to quickly reduce waste volumes while controlling harmful emissions, including dioxins. The company also emphasized the importance of proper waste sorting to improve efficiency and reduce operational challenges. The project is part of Pertamina’s strategy to expand into low-carbon and environmentally focused businesses while maintaining its core oil and gas operations. Pertamina plans to work with international partners to introduce the technology and transfer expertise to local workers. The initiative also demonstrates collaboration between state-owned enterprises, with Pertamina developing the plant and PLN purchasing the electricity.
