Indonesia has officially launched its B50 biodiesel program, making it the first country in the world to mandate a 50% vegetable oil blend in fuel. Introduced on July 1, the initiative is part of the government’s long-term strategy to reduce reliance on imported fuel, strengthen economic resilience, and maximize the value of domestic crude palm oil (CPO). The program requires a strict mix of 50% petroleum diesel and 50% biofuel, with a three-month transition period before full implementation. By October 1, 2026, all gas stations nationwide are expected to sell B50. This milestone builds on Indonesia’s biodiesel journey that began in 2008 with B2.5 and has steadily expanded to reach the current level. The government projects significant benefits from the transition, including saving up to Rp170 trillion (US$9.38 billion) in foreign exchange reserves by eliminating diesel imports, boosting CPO’s added value by Rp23.49 trillion (US$1.30 billion), and sustaining employment for 2.1 million workers. Environmentally, the program is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 44.46 million tons of CO2 this year. To address concerns about compatibility, officials confirmed that extensive technical testing has been completed across diesel engine sectors, ensuring safety and performance.
