Indonesia is positioning itself to become a leading Asia-Pacific hub for Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP), including stem cell, gene, and RNA-based therapies. According to BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar, the global ATMP sector is expanding rapidly, with more than 4,100 therapies currently under development and 148 already approved worldwide. The global market is projected to grow from US$41.46 billion in 2026 to US$86.76 billion by 2031, highlighting the increasing importance of regenerative medicine. To capitalize on this opportunity, Indonesia is strengthening its regulatory framework, promoting research and industrial development, and expanding international collaboration while maintaining strict standards for patient safety, efficacy, and product quality. To support this ambition, BPOM has introduced new regulations for ATMP evaluation in 2025 and is encouraging compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Indonesia currently has five GMP-certified stem cell facilities developing innovative therapies, while 43 additional facilities are being guided toward GMP certification. BPOM is also fostering collaboration among universities, industry, and government through a tripartite model, supported by partnerships with 186 higher education institutions and 270 GMP-certified pharmaceutical manufacturers.
