The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Saturday [04/07] announced the start of installing a new engine at the Ghabawi Municipal Solid Waste landfill, making it the fourth operational engine at the site under the biogas project.The launch took place in the presence of GAM Committee Chairman Yousef Shawarbeh, EU Ambassador Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Managing Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Region Gretchen Biery, according to a GAM statement.GAM Executive Director of Environmental Studies and Projects Suha Shishani noted that the production capacity of the new engine reaches 1.56 megawatts, raising the landfill's total power generation capacity to 6.28 megawatts, [...which] will directly contribute to covering a major portion of the municipality’s electricity needs, bringing the energy coverage generated by the landfill to 55 per cent of GAM’s total electricity bills.
