INDUSTRY GROWS 4.8% IN FIRST QUARTER

Jordan's industrial sector strengthened its role as a key driver of economic growth in the first quarter of the year, recording a growth rate of 4.8 percent. According to an analysis released Wednesday by the Jordan Chamber of Industry, the sector's value added increased to 2.274 billion dinars in the first quarter, up from 2.170 billion dinars during the same period last year. The analysis found that the industrial sector—which includes manufacturing, mining, and electricity and water supply—contributed 1.15 percentage points to the Kingdom's overall economic growth of 2.9 percent, accounting for about 40 percent of total growth during the quarter. The Chamber said the figures underscore the central role of the productive sectors, led by industry, as the primary engine of economic activity in the Kingdom. (ICE AMMAN)
