South Korea has expressed readiness to partner with Indonesia in developing nuclear energy, leveraging its extensive experience as a country where nuclear power accounts for more than a quarter of electricity generation. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has shown openness to nuclear energy as a cost-effective way to reduce emissions, with plans to launch the nation’s first reactor by 2032. South Korean Ambassador to Indonesia Yoon Soongu emphasized his country’s capabilities, noting that South Korea operates 25 nuclear power plants and has successfully secured international contracts, including a $20 billion agreement to build reactors in the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia is actively exploring nuclear options, including small modular reactors (SMRs), as demonstrated by a completed techno-economic study in West Kalimantan using US-based NuScale technology. In parallel, other international players such as Russia’s Rosatom are also pursuing cooperation opportunities, including proposals for floating nuclear power plants and local technology partnerships.
