INDONESIA TARGETS COMMERCIAL RARE EARTH PRODUCTION BY 2028

Indonesia is working to develop a domestic rare earth elements (REE) industry, targeting commercial-scale production by 2028 to strengthen its role in global critical mineral supply chains. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is advancing monazite processing technology to extract rare earth materials while safely separating radioactive elements like uranium and thorium. This effort includes upgrading pilot facilities to improve efficiency and prepare for industrial-scale operations, with the goal of producing non-radioactive mixed rare earth products. The initiative also aims to build a complete domestic supply chain for strategic minerals used in electric vehicles, renewable energy, electronics, and defense industries. Through collaboration with Malaysia’s Universiti Teknologi Petronas, BRIN is exploring greener processing methods, such as membrane-based technologies, to reduce chemical use and environmental impact. This partnership combines technological expertise to accelerate innovation, support sustainable mineral processing, and enhance regional competitiveness in the rare earth sector.Source: hhttps://indonesiabusinesspost.com/6757/energy-and-resources/indonesia-targets-commercial-rare-earth-production-by-2028 (ICE GIACARTA)
