INDONESIA TARGETS US$121 BILLION EV BATTERY INVESTMENT PUSH
Indonesia is actively promoting its abundant nickel and mineral resources to attract global investment and build a fully integrated electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem, estimated to be worth up to US$121 billion. According to the Ministry of Downstreaming and Investment, the country has a strong comparative advantage, possessing four of the six key materials required for EV batteries—nickel, bauxite, manganese, and copper. As the world’s largest nickel producer, contributing 42% of global supply, Indonesia aims to leverage these resources to strengthen downstream industries that convert raw materials into high-value battery components and electric vehicles. The government has also identified 28 additional strategic commodities to support its broader industrial development goals. Through this downstream strategy, Indonesia plans to become one of the top five global EV battery producers by 2045. The initiative is expected to significantly increase the value of its mineral resources—nickel alone could generate up to 67 times more value when processed into batteries—while reducing costs associated with global supply chain fragmentation. The long-term plan could generate up to US$618 billion in investment, boost exports to US$857 billion, and create over 3 million jobs. Currently, investment remains concentrated in the mineral sector, with smaller contributions from plantation, forestry, oil and gas, and maritime industries.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/420308/indonesia-targets-us121-billion-ev-battery-investment-push (ICE GIACARTA)
