During the ASEAN-Russia Summit in Kazan, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono pushed for cooperation in nuclear energy technology with Russia to help achieve national energy self-sufficiency within the next three years. While accelerating renewable energy development, Indonesia emphasized that this cooperation must prioritize technology transfer, human resource capacity building, and the highest international safety standards. Additionally, Sugiono highlighted Russia's strategic role as a major producer of energy, wheat, and fertilizer to ensure stable supply chains for the ASEAN market, thereby protecting the region's 670 million citizens from external economic shocks. To further secure national energy reserves amid global supply disruptions, Indonesia confirmed it is proceeding with a phased import of 150 million barrels of crude oil from Russia through the end of 2026, following President Prabowo Subianto's recent visit to the country. Alongside the oil imports, Indonesia is actively exploring a commercial partnership with Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, to construct floating nuclear power plants (PLTN).
