Second Kashagan gas plant project to be built with Chinese consortiumA consortium of Chinese companies has been designated as an EPC contractor for a second gas processing plant (GPP) at the Kashagan field with capacity of 2.5 billion cubic meters per year, Kazakhstan’s Energy Ministry said.The consortium consists of China National Chemical Engineering Sixth Construction Company Kazakhstan Branch and China Wuhuan Engineering Corporation Ltd, the ministry said in a statement following a meeting on the project.Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov said at the meeting that the project for construction of a 2.5 bcm GPP has entered the practical implementation phase.The meeting discussed the project’s current status, coordination among stakeholders and measures to ensure its timely commissioning, the ministry said.Akkenzhenov instructed all project participants to ensure effective coordination and constructive interaction to meet deadlines.QazaqGaz, the national gas operator, was tasked with providing the ministry monthly updates on the project’s progress, measures taken and any issues arising for prompt resolution.It was reported earlier that the basic design for construction of a gas processing plant with a capacity of 2.5 billion cubic meters pear year at the Kashagan field is underway. QazaqGaz had previously said it planned to build the plant jointly with Qatar’s UCC Holding.QazaqGaz is currently building the first gas processing plant at Kashagan with capacity of 1 billion cubic meters per year, with completion scheduled for the end of 2026. That plant was initially planned for completion in 2025, then pushed to mid-2026.Kashagan is an offshore oil and gas field in the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea and the country’s largest international investment project. Recoverable reserves are estimated at 9 billion to 13 billion barrels of oil. Commercial production began November 1, 2016.QazaqGaz, a subsidiary of Sovereign Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna, manages Kazakhstan’s gas pipeline network, oversees domestic and international gas sales, and develops gas transportation and storage infrastructure.
