INDONESIA EXPANDS NATIONAL RAILWAY NETWORK TO 10,524 KILOMETERS
Indonesia is accelerating the expansion of its railway network to 10,524 kilometers, aiming to cut logistics costs, ease road congestion, and close regional economic gaps. Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that this push follows directives from President Prabowo Subianto, who views modern rail systems as a hallmark of national development. Public trust in rail transport is rising, with passenger numbers increasing by 8.8% from 500.5 million in 2024 to nearly 550 million in 2025. The expansion strategy tailors development to each region’s needs, from high-speed and electrified lines in Java to freight-heavy corridors in Sumatra and industrial logistics routes in Kalimantan. In Sulawesi and Papua, projects like the Makassar–Parepare line are anchoring regional growth, while specialized logistics and tourist trains are being introduced to reduce road congestion and unlock local economic value. Dedicated carriage services for farmers and traders are already operating in several provinces, reflecting efforts to integrate agriculture and commerce into the rail system. Purwagandhi emphasized that a robust rail network will connect economic hubs, ports, airports, and tourist destinations, improving quality of life and strengthening competitiveness. The government is urging collaboration among local authorities, businesses, and operators to ensure safe, rapid, and sustainable development of this nationwide rail blueprint.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/419049/indonesia-expands-national-railway-network-to-10524-kilometers (ICE GIACARTA)
