INDONESIA DEVELOPS BIO-CNG FROM PALM OIL WASTE

Indonesia is advancing its green energy transition by converting palm oil mill effluent (POME) into bio‑compressed natural gas (bio‑CNG). PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), a subsidiary of the state electricity company, is leading this initiative to strengthen national energy security and reduce emissions. By processing POME into biomethane and purifying it into bio‑CNG, the program supports the electricity sector’s decarbonization strategy while maximizing domestic resources. North Sumatra, with its 327 palm oil plantation companies and 237 mills, is seen as a key hub for supplying feedstock to this effort. PLN EPI has partnered with PT KIS Biofuels to develop technology that will power the 1,184 MW Belawan Combined Cycle Power Plant, which supplies about 30% of northern Sumatra’s electricity. Beyond reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the initiative creates new economic value for the palm oil industry and communities, turning previously underutilized waste into clean energy. Hokkop Situngkir, PLN EPI’s Director of Biomass, emphasized that this step demonstrates how the energy transition can align with emission reduction, economic growth, and improved public well‑being.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2477051/indonesia-develops-bio-cng-from-palm-oil-waste#google_vignette (ICE GIACARTA)
