INDONESIA: BATAM PREPARED TO BECOME NATIONAL AVIATION MRO HUB
Indonesia is positioning Batam as a major hub for aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, alongside Jakarta, Surabaya, and Makassar. The Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development views this as a strategic move to reduce airline operating costs and strengthen the aviation industry. Key to success will be integrated connectivity between seaports, airports, and industrial zones, supported by initiatives such as the National Logistics Ecosystem, port digitalization, and optimized airport services. With maintenance currently accounting for 16–20% of airline operating costs, policies like lifting restrictions on component imports and introducing zero percent import duties are expected to ease financial burdens and help keep ticket prices affordable. Batam’s Hang Nadim Airport is central to this expansion, already hosting Batam Aero Technic within a Special Economic Zone. The project is targeting investments of around IDR 16 trillion (US$887 million), with 100 hectares of land available for further aerospace development. Fary Djemy Francis, Deputy for Investment and Business at the Batam Authority (BP Batam) has pledged to streamline licensing and ensure regulatory certainty to attract both domestic and international investors. This initiative not only aims to establish Batam as a premier aerospace hub but also to serve as a blueprint for Indonesia’s broader economic growth strategy.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/418627/batam-prepared-to-become-national-aviation-mro-hub-ministry?utm_source=antaranews&utm_medium=mobile&utm_campaign=latest_category (ICE GIACARTA)
