INDONESIA EXPANDS WASTE-TO-POWER PUSH WITH FIVE NEW PLANTS

Indonesia will begin simultaneous construction of five waste-to-energy (WtE) projects in June 2026 as part of a national strategy to tackle mounting waste problems while boosting renewable energy use. The projects will be located in Bekasi, Yogyakarta, Bogor, Denpasar, and Bandung, each designed to process over 1,000 tons of waste per day, with total combined capacity exceeding 7,000 tons daily. Bandung will host the largest facility, handling up to about 2,100 tons per day, followed by Greater Bogor, Bekasi, Denpasar, and Yogyakarta, serving major urban and surrounding areas. According to Presidential Staff Office chief Muhammad Qodari, these projects form part of a broader roadmap to develop waste-to-energy plants in 30 locations covering 61 regencies and cities by 2029. If fully implemented, Indonesia’s WtE capacity could reach 33,000 tons of waste per day—around 23% of projected national daily waste generation by 2029. The initiative reflects the government’s push to improve waste management, support low-carbon development, and advance the circular economy, alongside similar progress seen in Palembang, where a WtE project is already 74% complete and targeted to operate by October 2026.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-expands-wastetopower-push-with-five-new-plants (ICE GIACARTA)
