Second nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan to be built near BalkhashKazakhstan’s second nuclear power plant (NPP) will also be built near Lake Balkhash, the country’s Atomic Energy Agency head Almasadam Satkaliyev said Tuesday.“The decision on the second plant has already been made. It will also be located in the Balkhash area. (…) The working name of the second nuclear power plant is Moyinkum NPP, based on its location,” Satkaliyev told reporters in Astana.“The plant is expected to have two 1,200 MW units. We are currently in talks with partners to select a potential vendor,” he added.Satkaliyev said China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is being considered as a priority partner for the project.Sites for two additional nuclear power plants are under consideration, he added.Kazakhstan plans to build several nuclear power plants. The first will be constructed by Rosatom, with completion expected in about 11 years, potentially in 2035–2036. Site studies near the village of Ulken on Lake Balkhash began on August 8, 2025.
