IRAQI PARLIAMENT ELECTS THE NEW PRESIDENT

The Iraqi parliament has elected Nizar Amidi [Amedi] (pictured) as the new President of Iraq on Saturday.Amidi, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), succeeds President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid (also PUK), who withdrew from seeking a second term on Saturday.He has previously served as Minister of the Environment, stepping down in November 2024.The office of President is conventionally held by a Kurd. The other main Kurdish party, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), rejected the process used for the election, describing it as unlawful and outside established parliamentary procedures, and saying that it will boycott parliament.
