COUNTRIES TURN TO INDONESIA FOR FERTILIZER AS GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAINS FALTER
Rising global fertilizer demand is creating new export opportunities for Indonesia, as several countries seek alternative suppliers due to supply chain disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono stated that India, the Philippines, Brazil, and Australia have expressed interest in importing Indonesian urea. Around one‑third of global fertilizer shipments normally pass through the strait, and ongoing disruptions have pushed international urea prices up to nearly USD 900 per ton, compared with USD 600–700 previously. Indonesia is well positioned to respond because it produces urea using domestic natural gas, with a national production capacity of 14.5 million tons—exceeding domestic demand. The government projects a surplus of 1.5 million tons by 2026 that could be allocated for export after ensuring local farmers’ needs are met. Despite strong global demand, authorities have assured that domestic fertilizer stocks remain secure, noting that occasional distribution delays reflect increased planting activity and higher farmer demand rather than supply shortages.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2337552/countries-turn-to-indonesia-for-fertilizer-as-global-supply-chains-falter#google_vignette (ICE GIACARTA)
