GOVT: NATIONAL PULP AND PAPER CONTRIBUTES 3.73 PERCENT TO INDONESIA'S GDP
Indonesia’s pulp and paper industry continues to play a strategic role in the national economy, contributing 3.73 percent to non-oil and gas manufacturing GDP in 2025 and recording strong export performance, with pulp exports reaching US$3.60 billion and paper exports US$4.57 billion. The sector is supported by 113 companies and employs more than 280,000 direct workers and around 1.2 million indirect workers, highlighting its broad economic impact. Globally, Indonesia ranks seventh in pulp production and sixth in paper production, reinforcing its position as a major international supplier. Government officials emphasized the industry’s importance as a pillar of value-added manufacturing with strong multiplier effects. Growth prospects remain positive due to rising global demand for paper-based packaging from the food, beverage, fashion, electronics, and e-commerce sectors, alongside the shift toward environmentally friendly materials. The industry is also strengthening sustainability by diversifying raw materials, including agricultural fibers and palm oil waste, while aligning with green industry and circular economy principles. Despite challenges such as recycled paper supply limitations, regulatory requirements, and external standards like the EU Deforestation Regulation, the government is enhancing competitiveness through mandatory national standards, waste-processing innovation, and expanded market access, including participation in INNOPROM 2026 -a major international industrial trade fair- in Russia.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2316731/national-pulp-and-paper-contributes-373-percent-to-gdp-govt (ICE GIACARTA)
