Kazatomprom's sulfuric acid plant to be launched by mid-2027A sulfuric acid plant, required for the National Company Kazatomprom's uranium mining operations, is planned to be launched in Kazakhstan in 2026 or the first half of 2027, Kazatomprom CEO Meirzhan Yusupov said."We are currently in the process of constructing a sulfuric acid plant. We hope that later this year, or perhaps in the first half of next year, this plant will be operational, and we will become less dependent on acid imports," Yusupov said during a conference call to discuss the company's operating and financial results.According to him, rising prices for key reagents, primarily sulfuric acid, significantly impacted production costs in 2025."We were able to more or less control and manage the situation last year. We partially import sulfuric acid reagents from Russia," he explained.As a reminder, Kazatomprom's net profit for 2025 dropped by 29% to 807 billion tenge.In Kazakhstan, construction of a sulfuric acid plant, Taikonyr Qyshqyl Zauyty LLP, with a capacity of 800,000 tonnes per year, has been underway since 2024 in the village of Taikonur in the Turkestan region (southern Kazakhstan). Kazatomprom is expected to be the main consumer of the plant's products. The main goal of the project is to reduce dependence on sulfuric acid imports and ensure a stable supply for Kazakhstan's uranium industry.Sulfuric acid is used in in-situ leaching (ISL) technology for uranium mining.National Atomic Company Kazatomprom JSC is the national operator of the Republic of Kazakhstan for export of uranium and its compounds, rare metals, nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, special equipment, technologies and dual-use materials. Kazatomprom is controlled by Kazakhstan’s Sovereign Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna JSC. (ICE ALMATY)
