SYRIA REHABILITATES KEY IRRIGATION CANAL IN AL-GHAB PLAIN TO BOOST WATER EFFICIENCY

Syrian authorities, in cooperation with the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), have resumed work on rehabilitating a vital irrigation canal in the al-Ghab Plain in northwestern Hama. The project aims to enhance water efficiency and minimise losses within the agricultural network.  The project involves restoring approximately 2.5 km of the ‘J2’ canal with a reinforced concrete lining and clearing over 10 km of drainage channels. Abdulaziz al-Qassem, head of the General Authority for Al-Ghab Development, stated on Sunday that the work is intended to improve water flow and provide farmers with easier access to water.  The canal serves approximately 19,000 hectares of agricultural land, making it a vital part of the region’s irrigation system. The rehabilitation work is part of broader efforts carried out with international partners to support agricultural recovery. (ICE BEIRUT)
