INDONESIA OPEN FOR TARIFF CUTS IN EU PALM OIL BIODIESEL DISPUTE

Indonesia is preparing to notify the WTO of possible retaliation against the EU for failing to comply with a ruling related to the bloc’s REDD II policy, which classifies palm‑oil biodiesel as high‑risk and phases it out. While Jakarta wants to reserve its rights to suspend concessions, Trade Ministry official Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono said Indonesia is open to alternatives such as tariff cuts or other compensation from the EU. He cited a past U.S. case in which Washington offered tariff reductions under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) after failing to meet WTO obligations. Any retaliation, if pursued, must match the value of the damages and be approved by the WTO Dispute Settlement Body. The Indonesian government is still determining which EU-bound products could benefit from lowered duties and aims to proceed carefully to avoid harming broader relations — especially with the nearly finalized Indonesia‑EU CEPA trade agreement expected to be signed by May. Trade Minister Budi Santoso noted that while the focus would be on goods, other sectors remain possible targets. Despite the ongoing dispute, Indonesia aims to maintain stable ties with the EU, with palm oil expected to gain duty‑free quota access once CEPA takes effect next year.Source:https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-open-for-tariff-cuts-in-eu-palm-oil-biodiesel-dispute#google_vignette (ICE GIACARTA)
